Holiday hiking and camping in West Texas

As I've done each year since I've moved to Austin, I headed out to West Texas during the holidays once again. I visited three state parks, a state historic site, a national park, a city park, a national recreation area, and about a half-dozen small towns. Over the six days I was gone I walked more than 70 miles and drove nearly 1200 in addition to that.

Flying: My selfish time

I grew up on airplanes. With a father that is a pilot, I hopped on and off planes like most kids hopped in and out of their parents' minivans. And while our frequent flying fueled my brother's enchantment with becoming a pilot, I fell in love with air travel in a different way: I fell in love with being a passenger.

Hiking in Guadalupe Mountains National Park

For New Year's 2013, Ken and I visited Big Bend National Park in west Texas. The weather was temperate and the park was breathtaking. We had such a great time that we decided to visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park, also in west Texas, for another post-Christmas outdoor adventure one year later. This time we also brought along Ken's younger brother Thomas.
